stack of cardboardHave you ever thought about what it would be like to paddle a boat made of cardboard and duct tape around Lake Balboa? Well, now is your chance!! On July 27th, at the Lake Balboa-Kayak Launch, the Hot Springs Village POA Parks and Recreation Department and the HSV Paddlers Club will host a Carboard Boat Derby (Challenge). Boat building will occur from 9 a.m. to approximately 10:40 a.m. with the timed boat challenges starting at 11 a.m.

There will be space provided to build the boats as well as to cheer on your favorite competitors. Please come down and support the teams. If you are a member of an HSV club or organization or just a group of friends, come show off your skills in this interesting competition. Individual teams will consist of 3 - 5 people. Registration is required BEFORE the event takes place and costs only $5. All teams must provide their own cardboard and duct tape. However, boat construction is ONLY allowed during the allotted time slot. No work can be done beforehand. There will be no other materials used to make the boats. There will be judges present while the boats are being built and inspect the boats before they are put in the water.

The objective is to complete the course as quickly as possible. Once finished with your run please make sure to collect all your cardboard waste and place it in the proper receptacle provided. The slot you are set to run in will be randomly provided. For Event Rules and Registration forms head to the HSV Paddlers Club website. There will be instructions on how to send in forms and payment there. Remember: Entries MUST be received no later than July 20th to reserve a spot.

In case of bad weather, some of the events may be altered. If it has to be canceled altogether then a raindate of August 3rd will be used.
